Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. The AAPI umbrella term includes the cultures of the entire Asian continent including East, Southeast, and South Asia and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
As of 2019, there were approximately 22.9 million people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent in the United States. According to the Pew Research Center, the AAPI population is a diverse and growing population that makes up about 7 percent of the total US population. AAPI Heritage Month 2022 will be held from Sunday, May 1 to Tuesday, May 31.
History Of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
In the 1970s, a former congressional staffer, Ginny Jew, first approached Representative Frank Horton with the idea of establishing a month to recognize Asian Pacific Americans after the bicentennial celebration. In June 1977, Representatives Horton and Norman Y. Mineta, introduced a resolution in the United States House of Representatives to declare the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. A similar bill was introduced in the Senate a month later by Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga.
The proposed resolution is sought to be nominated for two reasons. On May 7, 1843, the first Japanese immigrants were present in the United States. More than two decades later, on May 10, 1869, golden spikes were driven into the first transcontinental railroad, completed using Chinese labor. President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution to celebrate on October 5, 1978.
On May 1, 2009, President Barack Obama signed Proclamation 8369, recognizing May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
