History of World Father’s Day
Grace, a native of Fairmont, West Virginia, applied for the first Father’s Day celebration. December 1907. 360 men lost their lives in a terrible mine explosion in Monongah, Virginia. Most of them were fathers of children. As a result, about 1,000 children became fatherless. This matter bothers Grace Golden Clayton. He requested the pastor of the local Methodist church to dedicate Sunday, July 5, 1908, as Father’s Day in honor of the martyred fathers. The reason for calling for Father’s Day on July 5 was that it was the birthday of Grace’s deceased father.
Then in 1985, the state declared Fairmont the birthplace of Father’s Day by erecting a historical plaque. From then on every Father’s Day, the Father’s Day Mass was narrated in the church. Another woman has played a leading role in giving international recognition to Father’s Day. Before 1909, there was no special day called Father’s Day in Washington. At that time, a Washington woman named Sonora Smart heard about a Mother’s Day celebration at a local church.
He was very surprised to know that there is a custom of celebrating Mother’s Day but not a custom of celebrating Father’s Day. Therefore, requesting to celebrate Father’s Day, he discussed with the local religious leaders and asked for permission to celebrate Father’s Day on June 5 of that year. However, due to lack of time, Father’s Day was celebrated in this state for the first time on June 19 of that year.
Sonora started the day with a heartfelt tribute to her father, William Smart. William Smart was a soldier during the Civil War. His wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. After that, despite the hardships, William raised six children alone.
Later, in 1913, a bill was introduced in the United States Congress to make Father’s Day a holiday. In 1916, then President Woodrow Wilson approved the bill and seven years later in 1924, the 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, made Father’s Day a national day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Since then, Father’s Day has been celebrated in honor of all the fathers of the world.
