The European Stroke Organization initiated the first Stroke Day in 1990 to raise awareness;  But due to the financial crisis, they celebrate this day on the 10th of May only in Europe.  The program to observe the first World Stroke Day was launched at the World Stroke Congress held in Vancouver, Canada in 2004.  In 2006, the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation merged to form the World Stroke Organization, which later took over World Stroke Day. 

Since October 29, 2007, ‘World Stroke Day’ is being observed every year under the World Stroke Organization to raise awareness of stroke.
