It is observed on the last Saturday of April every year. The day was initiated by the World Veterinary Association in 2000 and has been observed since 2001. The main objective of this day is to make animal husbandry aware of various issues while accepting the veterinary profession worldwide.
A theme related to animal husbandry, or the welfare of animals is decided every year to coincide with the day and that theme is promoted everywhere. Veterinary institutions, veterinary educational institutions, and voluntary organizations involved in veterinary medicine organize various programs on that day.
Furthermore, the World Veterinary Association awards individuals or organizations who have tirelessly committed themselves to the field of veterinary medicine. Our pets are very dear to us. We make every effort to protect pets. Just as humans are affected by various diseases, our pets are also affected by various complex diseases.
Veterinarians are our only hope then. People spend their whole lives trying to heal a pet. Veterinarians love our pets more than we do. Vets are the most selfless and caring people in the world. They treat our pets with utmost care. So having a special day for them is a must. Today on World Veterinary Day all vets should be honored for their work.

History of World Veterinary Day
In 1761, the first Royal Veterinary School was established in Lyon, France. There the students were taught the treatment of animal diseases. And this veterinary school was established by the Royal Council of State of King Louis XV. Then the Veterinary Congress was held internationally and was held in Edinburgh in 1863.
The meeting was attended by Professor John Gamgee of the Veterinary College of Edinburgh. He invited everyone to attend a conference of veterinarians in Europe known as the Veterinary Congress. The congress aimed to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience in veterinary medicine in European countries and the Veterinary Association helped to this end.
The Congress was working to improve animal health and welfare in food production and to establish international animal treatment standards. Then in 1959, the World Veterinary Association was established which was held in Madrid. There a constitution was drawn up and a decision was taken to create a world body.
The purpose of the World Veterinary Association is to give greater emphasis to the health and welfare of animals, the environment, and public health, and to work accordingly in pursuit of animal welfare goals in which various associations and organizations worldwide help. Such as WHO, OIE, and FAO. World Veterinary Day was first established in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association. Since then, this day is being celebrated worldwide. And day by day veterinary medicine is improving more and more.

World Veterinary Day Quotes
Increasing population pressure and unwanted interference in the wildlife environments, unscientific domestic animal husbandry, and distorted food habits have made the normal life process of humans vulnerable, the best examples of which are new coronaviruses including Sars, Mars, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, etc. In addition, many diseases including dengue, malaria, black fever, chikungunya, Zika, waterpox, and diarrhea are transmitted to humans by various insects including mosquitoes, flies, and other diseases that originate from animals.
Almost all the epidemics that have occurred in the world have originated from animals. The source of the novel coronavirus or covid-19 is bats or bats. Many believe the virus originated in a wild animal market in Wuhan, China. Be it a bat or a monkey, there is no room to disagree that it came from some animal. Therefore, there is no alternative to implementing a ‘one health’ system to control these diseases.
More initiatives should be taken to increase the simultaneous participation and contribution of human doctors as well as veterinarians on a health issue. Veterinarians need to focus on self-employment efforts and contributions to society to diversify the profession. Let’s take a look at some quotes on World Veterinary Day today through which we can appreciate the role of veterinarians-
- “Make your life your art. It doesn’t have to be that you’re an artist. I know I talk about art a lot, but I mean a very broad thing with that. You could be a veterinarian, that’s your art. Find your art; find the thing you love.” -Gerard Way.
- “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”― Mahatma Gandhi
- “A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.”― Leo Tolstoy
- Your life is your art. It doesn’t have to be that you’re an artist. I know I talk about art a lot, but I mean a very broad thing with that. You could be a veterinarian, that’s your art. Find your art; find the thing you love–Gerard Way
