History Of Black Saturday

This day, sometimes called Easter Eve, marks the full day when Jesus’ body lay in the tomb after his crucifixion on Good Friday and before his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

In the early days of the Christian Church, this day was a popular day for baptism.  Due to the solemnity of the day, few services are held on this day.  However, rites such as baptism can help in the salvation of the dead.  Some parts of the church such as Anglicans still hold baptismal services on Holy Saturday.

A less common name for this day is Descent into Hell, as in some Christian traditions it commemorates Jesus’ descent into Hell and victory.

An Easter Vigil is often performed on Holy Saturday evening to commemorate the vigil Jesus’ followers observed after his crucifixion on Good Friday.  Sometimes known as the Paschal Vigil, this service is held in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Vigils often begin with the church in the dark; All candles are put out on Maundy Thursday.

The minister enters the church, carrying a paschal candle (a special candle that symbolizes the body of Jesus), with the chant “Light of Christ” as the congregation says, “Thanks be to God”.  After the paschal candle is blessed, the rest of the candles in the church are lit from the paschal candle, and the church is illuminated with light.
