Greek Independence Day 2024

The Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution of 1821 or the Greek Revolution, was a successful war of independence by Greek revolutionaries against the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1829. The Greeks were later aided by the British Empire, France, and Russia, while the Ottomans were aided by their North African vassals, especially the state of Egypt.  The battle led to the formation of modern Greece.

The revolution is celebrated by the Greeks as Independence Day on 25th March. Greek intellectuals and humanists who had migrated to the West before or during the Ottoman invasion, such as Dimitrios Chalkkondyles and Leonardos Philarus, began to call for the liberation of their homeland. However, Greece was to remain under Ottoman rule for several more centuries.

A secret society called the Philiki Eteria (Friendly Society) was formed in 1814 to liberate Greece.  was founded, fueled by the revolutionary frenzy gripping Europe at the time. 

Phillips planned to start a revolt in the Ethereal Peloponnese, the Danubian Principalities, and Constantinople.  The rebellion was planned for the Orthodox Christian Feast of the Annunciation on March 25, 1821 (in the Julian calendar).  However, Filiqi Iteriya’s plans were uncovered by the Ottoman authorities, forcing the revolution to begin ahead of schedule.
