History of Civil rights day Or Martin Luther king Jr Day.
The famous human rights leader Martin Luther King fought against racism and equal rights for black people throughout his life. Under his leadership, black people in America got the same rights as white people. The legendary leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in a black pastor’s family. He is the second of three children born to Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. At first, he was named Michael King Jr. In 1934, when his son was six years old, father Michael named his son Martin Luther King Jr. after the famous German reformer Martin Luther.
In 1955, King joined Dexorta Avenue Baptist Church as pastor after completing his university studies. He then became directly involved with the black movement. In 1955, the historic bus strike began in Montgomery. The incident began on December 1, 1955, and centered on bus seats. Blacks did not have the right to sit in front of the bus in most of the southern states of the United States.
Rosa Parks, a black woman, did not accept the rule that reserved seats must be given up when a white person ascends. He protested. It was a violation of government law. Rosa was taken to the police station and fined $10. Luther King and other black Christian clergy decided to boycott the bus service in protest. Even after 381 consecutive days of various adversities, if blacks continue to boycott government buses, the Supreme Court declared this racist system of buses unconstitutional. Finally, their equal rights were established on the bus.
After the victory in the movement, King’s name spread throughout America. Many black leaders came forward to support his non-violent movement. Protests against racism began to rise across America. In continuation of this, King announced the movement against the discriminatory laws taken by the government in 1963. King and his followers continued the agitation for two months. Its main goals were to give blacks the same economic benefits as whites, to have access to blacks everywhere, and to end child labor. In one such peaceful protest, police in Alabama used repressive measures against the assembled crowd.
Martin Luther King and many others were arrested at that time. This incident caused a huge response worldwide. He then decided to start the Freedom March across the country. The march towards Washington started from different parts of the country. On August 27, 1963, more than two and a half million people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. King gave a historic speech in front of them, ‘I have a dream (I have a dream). In the speech, he said how apartheid is destroying the entire nation. He expressed his optimism about the future of America. Where all Americans will be equal. That would be the real America of the dream.
It was under the influence of his famous speech that the Civil Rights Act was enacted in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965. That year, The Times magazine awarded King the ‘Man of the Year award. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35 for his unforgettable contribution to the movement for human rights. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot dead by an assassin while standing on the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 39.
