In 1620, 120 people of various religions left England on a ship named May Flower in search of a new refuge.  Their main objective was to practice religion independently.  Their journey was two to three months.  After a long journey of two or three months, they stopped at Massachusetts Bay.  Many passengers became weak after being half-starved for a long time.

As it was winter, he became very ill due to the cold.  Those who were healthy came ashore from the ship.  And there they make their nest.  They built a village and named the village Plymouth Village.  There they met a tribe of American Indians named Squanto.  Squanto helps them in many ways.  He taught them how to grow corn, how to fish, and how to collect sap from maple trees.

In November 1621, the Plymouths brought home their crops. And the yield of their crops was much better. So Governor William was pleased to host a feast in honor of all the natives and Plymouths to mark the occasion. And on that occasion, they thanked God for the good harvest of their crops and thanked God for keeping them healthy, and then everyone thanked everyone for helping each other throughout the year.

This ceremony marked the first Thanksgiving Day in America and the day was recognized. Then in 1817, the first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in New York.  And on that day, Thanksgiving Day was recognized as a public holiday.  Then in 1827 Sarah Josepha, author of the famous nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb, took the initiative to have Thanksgiving Day declared a national holiday.

For 36 years, he has written numerous letters to governors, senators, presidents, and politicians, including writing an article editorial.  Joseph’s appeal was taken seriously in 1863, except by then-President Abraham Lincoln.  And when the Civil War was at its height, he now made a plea to the people to pray to the Most Merciful God for America.  O God, shower your love and mercy on those who have suffered in the civil war, the women who have lost their husbands, the children who have lost their fathers, and the loss of the nation.

Then he declared the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day as a public holiday.  It was celebrated like this till 1949.  But in 1939, President Franklin Rose Belt moved the holiday forward by one week to boost retail sales to overcome the economic depression of the time, and since then Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

What is the Date of Thanksgiving Day in 2022?

24 November. Source- Wikipedia.

The day is celebrated with great importance every year.  Because in my opinion, we should not ignore any opportunity to give thanks to the Creator and the people.  Be it of any religion.  Because religion is for people.  Not people for religion.  The more we learn to appreciate, to give thanks, the more peace will be established on earth.  Human-to-human violence will stop.  That’s why we celebrate Thanksgiving as a favorite and joyful occasion.  Therefore, on Thanksgiving Day, only traditional dishes are on the table.  A roasted turkey sitting majestically graces the table.

Many Bangladeshis living in America are no longer sitting.  They also observe this special day in the interest of their children born or raised here.  Bangladeshi and Muslim-owned grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and other states stock large quantities of turkey.  Compared to other mainstream festivals, this festival of Thanksgiving Day, which is universal regardless of creed and caste, now creates a joyous atmosphere in the communities of other countries as well.

In this way, the more we can forget racial, religious and caste hatred and differences and love, appreciate and thank everyone, the more peaceful our future world will be.  Our future generations will have the opportunity to live in peace.  The life of the earth will increase.

Thank You.
