Between 9 and 18 September 2022, the Heritage Open Days Festival returns with a packed program of events and activities. The 2022 theme, Amazing Innovation, celebrates England’s rich history of creativity, art, and innovation. Many of the places we care about will be joining in with free entry and events Plus, you can discover other events hosted by local organizations in your area.
Heritage Open Days are one of England’s largest voluntary cultural events, attracting around 800,000 people each year. Until April 2009 the Civic Trust provided central coordination and a national voice to the event. Heritage Open Days do not cover the whole of the UK but only operate across England, except for London, which is a separate event Open House London, usually held the following weekend, the third weekend in September. In Scotland, Doors Open Day is held in September.
History of Heritage Open Days.
The history of Heritage Open Day dates back to 1994 when England participated in European Heritage Day with 49 other countries. European Heritage Day is a collaborative initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission that brings together all 50 signatory countries to the European Cultural Convention. The annual program allows visitors to see buildings, monuments, and locations not normally open to the public.
Its aim is to promote the preservation of architectural and natural heritage while increasing accessibility. In English-speaking countries, these celebrations are also known as Door Open Days and Open-door Days. Similarly, Heritage Open Days is an annual celebration of England’s architecture and culture that gives people free access to historic buildings that are either not normally open to the public, require an entrance fee, or are always free and open to the public. It also has architectural and cultural tours, events, and activities.
The celebration involves 2,500 organizations, 5,000 events, and 40,000 volunteers each year. Heritage Open Days are one of England’s biggest cultural events, attracting over 800,000 people each year. This special event is organized by volunteers usually property owners or managers.
Heritage Open Days do not cover the whole of the UK; It only works in England, except for London, which has a separate event called Open House London the following weekend, usually the third weekend in September. Heritage Open Day was held for the first time in September 2018.
Why Heritage Open Days is celebrated?
England’s Heritage Open Days are part of European Heritage Days, an initiative run by the Council of Europe and the European Commission in which more than 50 European countries take part to shine a light on our shared heritage. Organized by the National Trust with support from the People’s Postcode Lottery, it describes itself as a “national local festival” and is England’s biggest celebration of history and culture in years.
The festival is now in its 28th-year thanks to the support of People’s Postcode Lottery players and more than 33,000 volunteers. We’ve helped coordinate this national festival since 2011, and it’s an important part of how we highlight the incredible history, heritage, and culture of not just the places we care about, but places and communities across the country.
Many of our curated spaces will be open for free on select days between 9 and 18 September 2022, with free private events running across the country so you can explore the hidden treasures and stories on your doorstep.

How to celebrate Heritage Open Days?
If you’re in England, take advantage of this day and visit one of the many historical landmarks that are part of Heritage Open Day. Broad concepts include the natural as well as the cultural environment. It includes landscapes, historic sites, sites, and built environments, as well as biodiversity, collections, past and continuing cultural practices, knowledge, and lived experiences.
It records and expresses the long process of historical development, which forms the essence of various national, regional, tribal, and local identities and is an integral part of modern life.
