History Of International Condom Day
In the 16th century Italy, Gabriele Fallopio wrote a treatise on syphilis. It is known that around 1490 syphilis emerged as a terrible disease. The patient died within a few months of the disease. Therefore, for sexual safety, a sheath made of linen was dipped in a special chemical solution and dried, and used during intercourse.
According to the text, the cloth covered only the penis. Men used to tie it with a ribbon. Fallopio claimed that experimental use of the gauze sheath showed that it could prevent syphilis. Since then, penis-covering has been used as a cure-all over Europe. Meanwhile, in China, penis condoms were made from oiled tissue paper or sheep intestines.
In Japan, condoms were made from tortoise shells or animal horns. Along with lingerie, the use of bowel and bladder condoms also came into vogue during the Renaissance. In the late fifteenth century, Dutch farmers brought condoms made of “good leather” to Japan. Previously, horned condoms covered only the tip of the penis in that area. But these leather condoms started to have the advantage of covering the entire penis.
Then in 2009, the International AIDS Organization launched the Condom Day campaign, which is celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day.
