Jordan Independence Day is celebrated every year on May 25, and is the most important event in Jordan’s history, as it commemorates its independence from British rule. After World War I, the Hashemite Army of the Great Arab Revolt occupied the region in what is now Jordan. The Hashemites started a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Sharif Husain.
The Allies, consisting of Britain and France, supported the Great Arab Revolt. It was Amir Abdullah who negotiated Jordan’s independence from the British. Although an agreement was signed on March 22, 1946, it was two years later that Jordan became fully independent. In March 1948, Jordan signed a new agreement in which all restrictions on sovereignty were removed to guarantee Jordanian independence. Jordan joined and became a full member of the United Nations and the Arab League in December 1955.
History Of Jordan Independence Day
After the end of World War I, the Emirate of Transjordan was formally formed from the British Mandate of Palestine in 1922 and formally recognized by the Council of the League of Nations in 1922. As-Sayyid Abdullah bin Al-Husayn was nominated. Despite being an Amir, many aspects of the country’s governance remained under the control of the British.
After World War II, the British pushed for an end to their mandate in the region, and on 25 May 1946, the United Nations approved the end of the British Mandate and Jordan became an independent sovereign state, officially known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. The Transjordanian Parliament proclaimed Sayyid Abdullah bin Al-Hussein as Abdullah I, the first King of the Hashemite Empire. After capturing Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank during the 1948 Arab Israeli War, King Abdullah I assumed the title of King of Jordan. On 1 December 1948, the kingdom was renamed The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
