History of New Year’s Day

New Year’s festival is considered to be the oldest among the festivals celebrated worldwide.  The Mesopotamian civilization (the civilization that developed on the banks of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers) records the first New Year celebrations around 2000 BC.  The ancient name of modern Iraq was Mesopotamia.  This Mesopotamian civilization was again divided into 4 stages.  Sumerian civilization, Babylonian civilization, Assyrian civilization, and Chaldean civilization.  Among them, the celebration of the New Year began in the Babylonian civilization.

At that time, the New Year festival was celebrated with great pomp.  However, it was not celebrated on the 1st of January as it is now but it was celebrated on the first day of spring.  Because, after shaking off the harshness of winter, nature begins to decorate itself again in spring.  Nature comes back to life with new leaves on trees, colorful flowers and the chirping of birds. The Babylonians celebrated this new awakening of nature as the beginning of the New Year.  However, the year was calculated based on the moon.  When the first moon rose in spring, the New Year and the New Year festival began.  It went on for 11 consecutive days.

After the Babylonian civilization, the Romans also celebrated the New Year festival in a grand manner.  But they had their own calendar.  Although that calendar was also made by the Romans by looking at the moon.  And according to that calendar, their new year was the first day of March.  Initially their calendar had ten months.  There were no months of January and February.  Later Emperor Numa Pontilius added January and February to the calendar.  Although there were months, the Roman calendar had no dates.  The Romans used to mark the different periods of the month by the different positions of the moon.  Moonrises were called calends, full moons were called ides, and mid-moons were called nunes.

The next emperor was Julius Caesar. Change the calendar.  He adds days-dates instead of calends, ides, nunes.  As a lunar month, the total number of days in the year at that time stands at 355.  Thus, as a result of calculating the year, the farmers of Rome began to face various problems. To solve the problem, Honchus Hades added an additional month to the calendar after February.  Instead of abating, the problem became more complex at that time.  Later, Julius Caesar reverted to the use of solar months instead of lunar ones.

As a result, the year became 365 days from 355 days.  (However, according to many, he created a 445-day calendar, not a 365-day solar one! Although this is disputed).  Despite all this, there was a problem with the Julian calendar. A doctor named Aloysius Lilius solved that problem by creating a new calendar.  Just 400 years ago, in 1582 AD, Pope Gregory XIII of the Vatican abolished the Julian calendar and introduced this calendar.

Which is now known as the Gregorian calendar.  Currently, all countries that have adopted the Gregorian calendar as their civil calendar celebrate the English New Year on January 1.  Historically, Scotland from 1600 AD, England, Ireland and British colonies from 1752 started following the New Year tradition.  Russia started following this practice from 1700.  So much for the history of English New Year.  Now let’s know the history behind the naming of English months.
