Every year since 1930, 20th August is celebrated as ‘World Mosquito Day’. Mosquito-borne malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filaria, Zika, and Japanese encephalitis are among the most serious human diseases. Therefore, this day is celebrated all over the world to make the public especially aware of the harmful effects of mosquito-borne diseases.
Awareness programs are conducted all over the world on this day to take precautionary measures to avoid mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito-borne diseases have been documented as a major cause of illness and death in human history for thousands of years.
History of World Mosquito Day
It wasn’t until the late nineteenth century that no one realized that mosquitoes were vectors of disease. The first breakthrough came in 1877 when British doctor Patrick Manson discovered that a Culex species of mosquito could carry human filarial roundworms.
Over the next two decades, he and other researchers from France, Italy, Russia, and the United States focused on malaria, a major killer in tropical and temperate countries. They slowly began to understand the complex equations of malaria transmission and biology between humans and mosquitoes.
In 1894, Manson persuaded Ronald Ross, Medical Officer of the Indian Medical Service, to ‘study mosquitoes’ as possible vectors of the malaria parasite. After years of relentless research, Ross finally proved in 1897 that the Anopheles mosquito could carry the malaria parasite. He called the day of his discovery, August 20, 1897, ‘Mosquito Day’.
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine later named 20 August World Mosquito Day, which is celebrated annually, to mark the significance of his discovery.
Why do people celebrate World Mosquito Day?
The main objective of World Mosquito Day is to raise awareness about mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito control requires public-private and individual cooperation. We need to ensure that dengue does not attack any of our families again. One day a week we go inside and outside our house to see if there is any water in the container if we throw it away or turn it upside down or take mosquito control measures there.
Awareness and involvement of the general public will play a key role in controlling mosquitoes and keeping families and countries free from mosquito-borne diseases. This complex association with the Anopheles mosquito also suggests that mosquito bite prevention and mosquito control systems – vector control – may play a key role in malaria prevention.
Mosquitoes are small in size but extremely dangerous. Mosquito bites can cause various diseases including dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. Hence, the day is celebrated all over the world to make the public especially aware of the harmful effects of mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, etc.
For this reason, this day is mainly observed to highlight the harmful aspects of mosquitoes among people and to make people aware of them.

- Plant a few tulsi plants in the tub at home, mosquitoes will escape
- Mosquitoes cannot tolerate the smell of camphor at all Place a 50-gram camphor tablet in a small bowl and fill the bowl with water. Then place it in the corner of the room. Change the water after two days
- Cut a lemon in half. Then stuff several cloves inside the cut lemon. Put the lemon slices on a plate and keep them in the corner of the room. Now watch the magic, in no time there are no mosquitoes in the house
- For this, a few cloves of garlic should be boiled in water. If you spray that water all over the house, you can get rid of the pain of mosquitoes
- Mosquitoes breed when rainwater accumulates. If water accumulates anywhere in the house, clean it at your own risk.
Not only mosquito bites cause pain, but also malaria-dengue, so be aware, and stay away from mosquito bites. Various seminars are conducted on this day to make people aware of these issues.
