History Of American Family Day

Historically, many cultures were patriarchal. Although this practice continued into Roman times, women were given somewhat more freedom than before, although they were still not free to manage their affairs. By the time we reached the Middle Ages, two distinct family patterns began to emerge in Europe. In southern and eastern Europe, marriage between an older man and a younger woman was common.

Both will usually live with their parents for a long time and have several generations in their combined family. In Northwestern Europe, couples were usually of the same age and waited until their early 20s to marry. They would then set up their independent families as the forerunners of the nuclear family. The Industrial Revolution brought about changes in the family unit, although some historians believe that this change began before this period.

The previous joint- or extended family broke up as people, mainly unmarried youth, left their homes to work in industrial establishments. The day began with a one-year proclamation, signed by then-Governor of Arizona Raul Hector Castro. The proclamation declared August 7th as American Family Day.

Many sources credit Arizona resident John Makai as the force behind the act, although not much is known about how it came about. The year after the declaration, new governor Bruce Babbitt signed the day into law as an official Arizona holiday. The growing interest in this holiday saw North Carolina, then Georgia, and now, all of America celebrate this day every year.
