HISTORY OF BUDDHA PURNIMA

Buddha Purnima is the main religious festival of the Buddhist community.  The day is known as ‘Buddha Purnima’ as three important events in the life of the great man Buddha took place on this full moon day of the month of Baisakh.  Gautama Buddha was born on this day in 623 BC, on this day in 588 BC he achieved success in Sadhana and became known as Buddha in the world, and on this day in 543 BC he attained Mahaparinirvana.  Buddhism was introduced to the world through Siddhartha’s Buddhahood.

According to Buddhist literature, when the bodhisattva in his previous birth was residing in the heaven named Santoshkumar, the gods asked him to take birth in the human race to find the path to the liberation of the world and the nirvana of gods and humans.  At the behest of the deities, the Bodhisattva took Pratisandhi in his mother’s womb through dream yoga on an Asadhi Purnima and was born on the next auspicious Baisakhi Purnima.  He was born in the open sky under the shade of the Sal trees of Lumbini Kanan.  He had no distinction of caste, caste, and tribe.

He knew man as man and animal as animal and he deeply understood the suffering inherent in all living beings.  So, he said ‘sabeva satta bhavantu sukhitatta’ may all beings in the world be happy.  To awaken this consciousness and to know this ultimate truth, he left the world at the age of 29.  While traveling in search of truth, he once went to Urubela (Buddha Gaya) in Gaya and engaged in meditation.  He attained Samyak Sambuddha or Buddhahood after six long years of continuous sadhana.  That day was also the full moon day of the month of Baisakh.

After attaining Buddhahood, Buddhadev discovered a way to get rid of all the sufferings of life called ‘Dharmachakra Mandhana Sutra’ for the liberation of living beings.  In a theory known as Chaturaryastya, he explains the origin and cause of suffering in life and the way to get rid of it.  This path to liberation is called the Arya Ashtangika Marg or the Eight Aryapaths.

For forty-five long years, he traveled to different parts of ancient India and preached his theology.  He established a new ideology in the world by highlighting the liberation of all classes of people, king-subject, rich-poor, and noble-endy.  At the age of eighty years, he attained Mahaparinirvana by taking his last breath in the Shalban of Kushinara Mallad on the banks of the Hiranyavati river.
