Dissatisfaction with Rana’s rule led to the revolution of 1951 which ended the Rana aristocracy. The Maoist revolution that began in the early 1990s eventually turned into a full-blown civil war. The democracy movement in 2006, resulting from a seven-party alliance, ended the civil war and catapulted the Maoists into mainstream politics. The Constituent Assembly was elected in 2008, ending the monarchy, and subsequently, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal was declared a parliamentary republic.
