Republic Day is a national holiday in Nepal. It commemorates the date on which the Constituent Assembly of Nepal held its first meeting on 28 May 2008, ending 240 years of rule by the Shah Rajas and declaring Nepal a republic. The establishment of the republic ended nearly a decade of civil war. According to the Nepali calendar, Republic Day is marked on the 15th of Jethu every year. The celebrations include a military parade in Kathmandu and several small and large events organized by various government agencies across the country.

Modern Nepal was created in 1768 when Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered the Kathmandu Valley and formed a unified country from several small independent states. The prime minister and other government posts were hereditary, and the king had no real power. History Of Nepal Republic Day

Modern Nepal came into existence in 1768, when he ruled the country until 1951. The prime minister and other government posts were hereditary, and the king had no real power.  Dissatisfaction with Rana’s rule led to the revolution of 1951 which ended the Rana aristocracy.  The country was a constitutional monarchy after the end of Rana rule, but in 1960, Raja Mahendra suspended the constitution, assuming absolute power under panchayat rule. After the mass movement in 1990 that ended the panchayats, the constitutional monarchy was re-established, and King Birendra introduced several democratic reforms.

In 1991, an elected government was formed for the first time in 32 years.  But the new government’s policies lead to an economic crisis. The Maoist revolution that began in the early 1990s eventually turned into a full-blown civil war. The democracy movement in 2006, resulting from a seven-party alliance, ended the civil war and catapulted the Maoists into mainstream politics. The Constituent Assembly was elected in 2008, ending the monarchy, and subsequently, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal was declared a parliamentary republic.
