History Of Buddha Day

Historians believe that Siddhartha Gautama was born into an aristocratic family in the small Sakya Republic, which is now part of Nepal. Gautama renounced his inheritance after reaching adulthood and lived as an ascetic, studying under various teachers. After six years of searching for a solution to human suffering, Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The Buddha spent the remaining 45 years of his life traveling the Gangetic plains of north-central India, teaching his doctrines and establishing his religion.
After he died in 483 BC, the Buddha’s followers started a religious movement and his teachings evolved into Buddhism. Buddhism was established as the state religion of India during the reign of Ashoka the Great (268 BC to 232 BC) of the Maurya Empire (322 BC to 185 BC), and it soon spread to Central and Southeast Asia, including China and Greece. Buddhism gained more popularity in China and Sri Lanka than in India. Buddhist art with anthropomorphic images of the Buddha began to appear in these countries between the second and first centuries BCE.
