History of Sri Lanka National Day

Sri Lanka’s recorded history goes back 3,000 years, with evidence of prehistoric human habitation dating back at least 125,000 years.[15] The country has a rich cultural heritage.  Sri Lanka’s oldest known Buddhist texts, collectively known as the Pali Tripitaka, were composed during the Fourth Buddhist Sangha, which took place in 29 BC.[16][17] Sri Lanka’s geographical location and deep harbor date from the early days of the ancient Silk Road trade routes to today’s so-called Maritime Silk Road.  giving it great strategic importance.

Its location made it a major trading center, making it already known to Far Easterners and Europeans from the Anuradhapura period.  The country’s luxury goods and spice trade attracted traders from many countries, which helped create Sri Lanka’s diverse population.  The Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka (mainly by accident) during a major political crisis in the Sinhala Kotte kingdom and then tried to control the island’s maritime territory and its lucrative external trade.  Some parts of Sri Lanka were taken over by the Portuguese.  After the Sinhalese-Portuguese war, the Dutch and the Kingdom of Kandy took control of those areas.

The Dutch occupation was then taken over by the British, who later expanded their control over the entire island through colonization from 1815 to 1948. Around 1930, the freedom movement started due to the British persecution of the locals.  After World War II, the independence movement gained momentum.  A national movement for political independence began in the early 20th century and Ceylon became a dominion in 1948.  In 1972, the Republic of Sri Lanka replaced the dominion. That day in 1948 was February 4th and since then Independence Day is celebrated in Sri Lanka on February 4th Independence Day is known as National Day in Sri Lanka.
